Lessons Learned from a Worn Out Pair of High Heels

pink high heelsI threw out a favorite pair of heels on Saturday.

That may sound like an unimportant thing but these were my favorite high heels in the world.

Following the Parisian guide to style, I keep a very small wardrobe including my shoes.  I have two pairs of inexpensive black heels (my former job required heels all the time) and these:  my lovely nude go-with-anything-two-inches-high-heel slippers.

I was dismayed when the strap on the left side of my shoe busted but not surprised.

These gone everywhere with me for the past three years and I mean everywhere.  Even though the cost less than many fancy shoes, I paid more on them than any other shoes I ever had and I wore them every opportunity I could.

And these darling heels wore themselves plain out.

I loved these heels for so many reasons. They....

  • Brought me to all sorts of destinations with nary a callous or blister.
  • Snuggled compactly in a tight suitcase.
  • Made me feel more confident and stylish.
  • Coordinated with almost every outfit.
  • Accessorized a hundred outfits for a thousand occasions.
  • Showed off my (usually) cute polished toes.
  • Garnered a lot of compliments (who doesn’t love to be given a compliment for their cute shoes?)

I wasn’t sad about the busted heels for one reason:  they wore out because they couldn’t go on another minute.

Their time was up and I knew it.

Truth be told, their “time” was a bit overdue:  about three of the straps were weak and the buckle on the left shoe was threatening to break.

What can I say?  I liked ‘em a lot. And I didn’t want to give them up.

They clunked into the garbage and I said a little “thank you” for the reliability and service they had provided me with:  all worn out because they had been everywhere, done everything and ultimately, fulfilled their purpose.

Kinda like you and me.

We gotta know that when our time on planet earth is over, we made our dent- we did the thing- whatever your “thing” is.

There is a huge desire to be truly useful that lives inside each one of us.   While the “easy life” of being served and taken care may seem alluring, we know we would get bored fast.

Why?

Because more than pleasure and security, we need to feel we have purpose; to do something with our gifts and skills, not just let them sit and squander.

My darling high heels served their purpose and pulled into the finish line completely worn out and appreciated for what they gave.

I hope to do the same.
