Do Something Creative Everyday

Do a little bit of something creative every day.

It is so easy to get caught up in the routine, in the expected, in the responsible that we lose track of the activities and moments that create a beautiful life.

How can we get back the joy and beauty we want?

Do something creative every day.

Make something with your hands.  Take pictures.  Refurbish old jewelry.  Start the watercolor collage.

To find joy and beauty; to pursue it; the beauty of the everyday- that can be a reason for a creative to get up in the morning.  To push back the bed covers and throw open the window and head for the coffee machine, looking forward to the new day.

Making things with your hands, words, the brush or the mixing bowl may seem like one more thing you don't have time to do.

Yet, somehow, when we make time for creativity, we find the time for other things.  Some of the unimportant slip away- re-organizing a drawer, a television show, spending time worrying or unnecessary errands.  Priorities re-organized eliminate the unnecessary.

I don't have enough time.

Not having enough time is one of the biggest hang-ups I hear that keeps people from doing something creative, even the audacity to try to do something creative every day.

But it doesn't have to take an enormous amount of time to be creative every day.  My projects, even the small ones are done in bits at a time- a chunk of 30 minutes to a few hours- depending on the day, the project and my honestly, my own organization.

And the joy and satisfaction that comes when we make something with our own hands is truly special.

But what is easy to do is so easy not to do.

Try An Experiment:  Do Something Creative Every Day....for a Week

Instead of committing for forever, just do a little experiment with yourself.  Try it for a week.  Writing the novel, working on the collage, taking pictures, baking something new.

I started this particular collage on a Saturday and finished it on a Monday.

On Saturday I cut out the letters and painted a quick 2-color watercolor wash.  I  made the general design of the collage.

Sunday I added the decor- the bits of scrapbook paper, remnants of watercolor paintings and the additional dots.

On Monday, I added the watercolor flower and emphasized the dots with an extra blush of pink.

Three days - maybe three hours.

Just a little bit of creativity every day.

What creative something could you do today?

It could be...

  • making the batter for chocolate chip cookies (stick it in the refrigerator to chill for 24 hours- the flavors will deepen and it will bake thicker)
  • starting a page in a scrapbook
  • designing the cover of a journal
  • stripping the paint of a piece of furniture you've wanted to re-do.

Creative acts lift our spirits, brighten our lives and create laughter and joy.

Do something creative every day.

Start today and try it for a week.  And let me know what happens :)
